I have a wonderful class of 19 kindergarten students in a public school in the city of Buffalo. Most of these students come from low-income households. Many students can not afford basic school supplies and I do what I can to provide them with these materials.
My students bring with them a rich variety of cultural experiences.
I have over ten different languages spoken in my class, and over 30 different languages spoken in our school. Some of my students do not speak any English at all, but they are learning. Some of these students have just come to America from other countries and some from refugee camps. It is challenging to teach students who speak limited to no English, but it is also very rewarding.
My students love to learn! Any resources that I can provide for them will encourage this love of learning!
My Project
My students have been learning from home since the beginning of the school year. Although my connection with them has been really wonderful, it is not the same as being in person. We don't know yet when we will go to school this year in person.
I would like to give them a book, as we start our next virtual month of learning, that we can read together and that they can keep.
The book I have chosen is "Pete the Cat and the Cool Caterpillar" -an I Can Read Book. It will be a fun surprise for my students to receive their own book brought to their home! They can read the book with their families and we will also read it together. This book can be used for some fun learning activities as well. I am including a special, large grip pencil so they can continue to develop their fine motor and writing skills at home. They can write about what they have read!
