Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are dedicated to their education and have the kindest hearts out there. I teach in a poverty-stricken area, so many kids lack access to resources outside of school. They come to school to learn, and they come to school to feel safe and welcomed.
Each student has a distinct personality which is what makes them so fun to teach!
I feel that they deserve the best education that they can get, and I know that it is my job to deliver it.
My Project
I love reading to my kids, and research has shown the importance of reading picture books to kids of all ages. I teach 5th graders, and I want to join in the Classroom Book a Day movement. I tried it last year, but found it difficult to attain books that interested my students that they hadn't already read. I tried the public library as well, but struggled to make time to search for books, and then return them in a timely manner.
I am hoping to start a library of my own, with books chosen to engage and expand my students thinking.
I want to offer genres that they may not have looked at before. I see the power that picture books have, and I know that reading one picture book per day will keep our read-aloud time exciting, and engaging!
I am so excited to try this again next year, and I am hoping to get a head start on creating the library of books that will help me be successful!
