Help me give my students a classroom library that will fuel and grow their love for reading.

My Students

My 3rd graders are simply amazing. As a first year teacher, I was terrified of what I was walking into. I was hired eight weeks into the school year and truly did not know how the year was going to go. My students have met my expectations and exceeded these expectations with ease. My 23 students are adaptable, motivated, accepting, selfless, and hard-working. They welcomed me into a new classroom with open arms, when it is typically the other way around.

My students are passionate about loving themselves and loving others.

This translates into their every day work and performance. Every morning, we start off the day with our daily affirmations. We remind ourselves that we are leaders, we are intelligent, we are loved, and we are born to make a difference. A couple of weeks ago, we welcomed a new student in our classroom. This student does not speak English and just recently moved to the United States. Almost half of my students are ESL learners and they immediately began translating for him.

I think COVID-19 has impacted learning by impacting student-student relationships, student-teacher relationships, and student-self relationships. Without relationships in a classroom, learning becomes purposeless.

My Project

My goal is to make my classroom library a safe haven. I want this area to be comfortable, relaxing, and enjoyable. This is all made possible through the power of books! In light of COVID-19 my students will still be able to hunker down with a book and shut out the rest of the world for a minute. I want a place my students can go to that allows them to find their voice, culture, and gender represented in a book.

There are too many students that cannot relate to books they read.

Whether it be lack of cultural representation, language barriers, or skin colors that look nothing like there own, my current students and future students to come will read books that make them proud of who they are.

Included in my wish list is also a variety of prizes for my "Reading Prize Box." Sometimes students need that extra motivation when it comes to reading so I have included little trinkets to award my students each time they read a certain number of pages.

I loved reading as a kid, and now even more as an adult. I want to encourage my students to never stop reading because each book holds so much power.
