Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students defy the odds. We are located in the South Bronx, within one of the poorest districts in the country. The poverty and violence rates in our neighborhood are sky-high compared to the rest of the state. Many of our students come to school because it is a safe place where they receive basic human needs.
Statistically, our students are not supposed to succeed, but if you took one step into our classroom you can see that they are not another statistic.
These kids are motivated and love to learn! Unfortunately, our school is a tad bit outdated. We are still using chalkboards and poster paper to write down notes. We are using textbooks and outdated worksheets in our classrooms. I want to make school fun, live, and interactive. Our classrooms need to be revamped, and our kids need more programs to keep them out of harm's way outside of school. We need programs in sports, science, journalism, math, and music. We need to balance out the academics with the social aspects of life and help cultivate active exemplary citizens.
My Project
Our kids need to read, and it is a challenge to get them to finish an entire book. I recently purchased one of the Phil Jackson books for one of my students, and he admits that he actually likes it and is reading it at home! This kid NEVER reads! I wish I had the funds to buy books for those kids that find all of the school books "boring", unfortunately I wasn't one of the folks to land a Bitcoint back when it was just a penny, therefore I can't always buy them books.
I'm not asking for a full 1000 title library, but just enough to get my ICT class turning pages for the second half of the year.
I'm requesting several series sets (Harry Potter, Maze Runner, Hunger Games, ect) for those who are interested in reading books that have become motion picture hits. I'm also asking for a few sports biography books for my boys who swear they know about Basketball and Baseball. A handful of recent best sellers such as "I am Malala", "They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky", and "War Against All Puerto Ricans" just to keep them woke and aware of whats happening around the world. For my students with disabilities I've selected several graphic novels such as "Invisible Emmie" , "This One Summer", and a few others. I wont bore you with any more titles since y'all can just scroll down and read them yourselves, but the point is to have at least one book that'll interest my students and provide a variety of options.
