My Students

My students are 8th grade special needs students from a low income urban area. About 90% of my students have state funded lunches. Although my students are curious, energetic and wonderful, they often come to school behind and need small group, multi-sensory, cross-curricular experiences to help them improve and make progress in all areas.

A flower garden provides opportunities to reach students using all Multiple Intelligence learning styles: kinesthetic, naturalist, interpersonal, intrapersonal, musical, linguistic, logical, and spatial.

Gardens engage the senses without being over stimulating. Children can explore different colors, textures, smells, and sounds in a calming, natural setting. Gardening allows for repetitive activities, yet still offers some challenge by providing constant change. Students can establish a comforting routine (gather needed tools, check on the plants, pull a few weeds, water, etc.), but there will be subtle changes to engage the curiosity of the child with each visit such as flowers grow.

Gardening is an activity that can be shared. There are many opportunities for positive social interaction and teamwork.

My Project

Besides the benefits listed above, having a beautiful garden are numerous. By taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, plants play an important role in reducing pollution and maintaining a healthy environment. Growing a plant from seed can be a challenging yet rewarding experience. My class will grow plants from seed and create a journal to document the journey.

They will learn many basic skills in gardening ranging from the region they live in (and the many vegetables that grow in their region) to different types of flower such as perennials and annuals.

We can't wait to get our hands dirty!
