I teach first grade at a Title I school where sixty-one percent of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. My students come from a wide range of households speaking many different languages and having varying levels of access to learning opportunities outside of school.
What binds my students together is their sense of a class family.
They know that when they enter their classroom, they can count on each other for help, advice, and encouragement. Most of our activities are based on cooperative learning and teamwork.
My Project
My students need engaging books and activities to delve more deeply and meaningfully into history and geography. Leveled readers about biographies of leading Americans will captivate my students' imaginations and make history come alive for them.
My students' creativity will be ignited by three art projects: they will get to make their own totem pole poster, a 3-D globe, and a biography triptych.
We'll also discover the wonder and beauty of primary source documents, like old maps and journals of early American explorers. Once my students get a taste for how fun social studies can be thanks to these fun resources, the rest will be history!
