Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kindergarten students come from a close knit community with parents willing to contribute in ways they are able. Students in my class are five and six years olds. Most are Hispanic and are English language learners. Ninety percent of my students are on the free or reduced price lunch program.
My students come to school everyday eager to learn with open hearts and open minds.
Families entrust in me to provide them with all opportunities for learning. These students deserve the opportunity to learn, to explore and to play while learning with an enriched environment in the classroom.
My Project
Our school is starting a new dual immersion program. 90% of the day will be taught in Spanish with only 10% of the day in English. Since our dual language program is new, there is very few Spanish materials inside the classroom. My classroom currently has an old rug. However, it is dirty, beginning to rip, and is in English only.
A bilingual rug would be a focal point and complete one of the main areas in dual-language kindergarten classroom.
In this area, students will complete calendar, listen to and read stories, participate in social skills class meetings, and other activities. They will be able to expand our foundation of their letters, sounds and numbers as they come together as a class.
This activity rug is full of tools to build essential literacy skills. It features common objects like ball and book so that children become familiar with words they will encounter every day. It also features numbers and colors with words in both English and Spanish. It also comes with a complete guide full of literacy-building activities. I want to provide a rich space in the classroom that fosters both languages.
