I teach an amazing group of first graders at a Title I school in a small rural community in South Carolina.
I have 17 students in my classroom, 8 boys and 9 girls.
My students come from many different backgrounds, but in my classroom we strive to create a classroom community where everyone is accepted and encouraged to be themselves.
My students are full of potential and deserve access to materials and resources that will help them to be successful.
My Project
The classroom carpet is the central meeting place in our classroom. Students meet there in the morning to greet one another, they come to hear read-alouds, they share the space when reading independently or with partners, and we use it when we have reading and writing workshops. We are constantly using our carpet. My students love using the carpet to learn and collaborate, anytime we can move away from our desks! The problem is, our carpet is too small to fit all 17 of us. This leaves several students sitting in chairs or on the tile around the carpet. My goal is for everyone to have a spot on the carpet, so that we can continue to grow our classroom community. I want all of my students to feel like they are a part of the group when we are at the carpet!
