Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach the preschool program for children with disabilities in my school. It is a program for three and four year olds who have any sort of disability. I have a mixture of students with Down Syndrome, language delays, autism, blindness, and mental retardation.
This year I have several students with autism in my self-contained classroom, and most of the children in my classroom have sensory challenges. I would really like to make the atmosphere of my classroom a safer, more helpful environment for them. Most schools have fluorescent lighting, which flickers and bothers children with autism and sensitive eyesight, and also makes annoying buzzing sounds to those with sensitive ears. The children in my class like to have things to calm them down, things to chew on, and music to soothe them. I would really like to provide them with an environment that they will find calming and safe.
The materials that I am requesting are shades that will cover the fluorescent lights with a soft blue color, which is calming to children; a music CD; a DVD of water scenes, which I know my children will just love; some "chewlery" for the students with autism to chew on and help them focus; a "Lumindisk" that lights up and responds to their attempts to speak; and a wall panel with different textures of materials for their little hands to explore.
The entire class will benefit from a calmer, cozier environment. Having an environment that the students are comfortable in helps all of them and sets the stage for learning. My students are working hard this year and are very eager to learn. All of them are making great progress. I would love for our classroom to help them even more! Thank you so much for reading!
