My students need the 2018-2019 Beehive Nominee books, like "Amina's Voice" and "Refugee", so that they can participate in our school-wide reading challenge.
As Frank Serafini once said, "There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book." As an educator and a reader, I want to help my students find the right book.
In order to do so, I need to provide my students with a range of books, from fiction books to picture books to informational books to graphic novels and to poetry.
Once my students have the books, I want to find creative and engaging ways to challenge my readers and draw them into these books. Which is why, throughout the year, I am going to do various book challenges, such as the Utah Beehive Challenge, the 40 Book Challenge, and our district's Battle of the Books.
My Project
Students at my school love two things: reading and challenges. So, as a school, we've decided to put the two together and hold school-wide reading challenges. One of those challenges is to read every book, in all five genres, of the Beehive Book Nominee (a Utah state award) before the end of the school year. While my school library does have one copy of each of the books, that will not be enough copies for all the avid readers that are found within our school walls.
Due to this, I would like to have a copy of each of the books in my classroom library, where my current students can enjoy them and check them out more frequently.
By encouraging reading through challenges, it will show readers that reading can be fun and very engaging. After all, our goal should always be to build better readers with life long reading habits.
