I work in an elementary school in Chicago teaching sixth graders in a self-contained classroom. I teach Literacy, Math, Science, and Social Science. 99.5% of my students are African-American and many of them live in nearby public housing projects and homeless shelters. I try to create for them a classroom that is warm, welcoming and inviting with bright colors, as well as photographs of them and their classwork prominently displayed in the classroom. This year I would like to create a Literacy Lounge in the classroom to encourage independent reading and to allow my students to experience the enjoyment that comes from curling up with a good book and reading in a "home like setting" something that many of them cannot do in their own homes. I would like to have a small sofa, a floor and table lamp, rugs, soft pillows and book and magazine racks in this area. I would also like to have a Yacker tracker a device that would remind the students who are working independently at other centers in the room to keep their voices at whisper level so as not to disturb the students in the Literacy Lounge area. The only thing that separates many students in an urban area from other students in the world is experience and opportunity. I would like to give my 26 students this experience and the opportunity to become lifelong lovers of reading.
