BSC School serves students in grades Pre-K to 6. It provides rigorous academics, exemplary teachers, and a safe learning environment. Our goal is to close the achievement gap and prepare students for success in high school and college. Although we set high expectations for all learners in our building, we are faced with many challenges!
My school has a very high immigrant population and 60% of my grade four students are English Language Learners.
My students come from all around the world and from many different and often difficult situations. Based on my students low socioeconomic status, 100% receive free breakfast and lunch. The majority of my students are also being raised in single-parent homes or by their grandparents.
I am a fourth grade teacher in a low income, high poverty school district. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite these challenges, my students are enthusiastic learners and enjoy the daily structure that our classroom community provides them! My students inspire me to create high-quality, engaging lessons on a daily basis.
My Project
Our Fourth Grade classroom would love to have a place where the students could come together as a whole group. During our class English Language Arts block, the students follow along and read chorally with their teacher as I lead them for the daily lesson. At this point, the lesson is teacher guided and having a rug for the students to meet on would be so much better than sitting in their seats. This large, beautiful, blue rug has cool square designs all over, so that the students can easily pick a spot! Also, our school needs to provide the students with water to drink, since we cannot use the drinking fountains. I do have a water cooler, but would love some fresh water to complete the system.
