I'm a 5th grade teacher in Brooklyn, New York. Raised in central New York, I found that the experiences I had growing up were not readily available to the students I teach. Students today are drilled with the basics--reading, writing and math- and are under constant pressure to perform. There's more to education than the "3Rs" I propose integrating arts and crafts into the core curriculum. I would like to do a basket weaving project with the students. This will tie in nicely with our study of native Americans, incorporating social studies with a long forgotten art. Students will create their baskets, then write about the process involved thus incorporating another curriculum area. For this project I would need enough basket weaving kits for 28 students. I would like to do this as a unit project for the weekly art class that I conduct for interested 5th grade students. Please consider my proposal. Every child deserves the chance to create.
