My students need 30 copies of "A Bad Case of the Stripes" by David Shannon and the audio version to help them learn about individuality and acceptance.
Do you remember when you liked something that wasn't considered to be cool? My sixth graders are learning to be individuals, what better way to do this than reading "A Bad Case of the Stripes," by David Shannon.
My English as Second Language classroom consists of 25 English language learners in the sixth grade.
Some of the students just moved to the country, while others have lived in the USA for several years. Living in a urban city, many of the students face many hardships at such a young age. Many of the students come from Spanish speaking countries, such as The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. Other students in the classroom are from Laos, Senegal, Gambia, and Iraq. Together, they are inspiring each other to become great citizens of the USA.
My Project
With the book, "A Bad Case of the Stripes," by David Shannon, the students will be learning about individuality. During adolescents, it is important to be guided in a nurturing and accepting environment. Learning about individuality and differences with the use of the book, shows the students it is normal to be different. Not only will this book help us tackle the theme of individuality, but using different reading strategies, the students will improve their English language skills through understanding different reading skills and strategies. The students will be learning about cause and effect, connections, story elements, sequencing and summarizing. Not only will they be able to read this story, but they will be able to reenact the story through performing a play.
This project is very important to the students.
Moving to a new country at an older age is difficult. Many of the students already feel out of place. By reading this story, and using the information to teach individuality and differences the students will feel more comfortable with who they are. Please help me mold the minds of today's youth to become better citizens with this project.
