My students are highly motivated individuals. They work their hardest and deserve the best. Around 90% of our student population is involved in either a sport, club, or in some volunteer capacity.

For now, that means having access to books. Not textbooks, but novels, graphic novels, non-fiction and any other type of story that holds their attention and lets their imagination swirl and dance and create images conjured from the words in front of them.
Yes, I am an English teacher, a dedicated one that knows how powerful reading daily is. Hopefully, through this project and generous donations, all my students will have access to physical copies of books to be discussed and enjoyed by all who open them.
To have a class set of American Born Chinese will allow the students to have a tangible book that is not on a screen. The icons and illustrations are already luminous enough that the only issue for my students is that we do not have enough texts for everyone.
This book will allow my students to explore the trials and tribulations of a generation 1.5 immigrant, and, hopefully, my students will connect with the characters and their struggles.
The story also goes deep into the most famous Chinese folktale--Journey to the West. Studying Chinese history and stories will provide my students an clear picture of the world they live in, and of the people that make it a special place.
