My scholars attend a Distinct Special Education Program that serves students with moderate to severe learning disabilities. My scholars attend an urban, Title I school in the most diverse zipcode in the United States. This is my 9th year teaching in South Seattle, but my 1st full year teaching in person at GHE and I feel so fortunate already.
This school is filled with brilliant scholars, families, educators and community members who work extremely hard to serve scholars furthest from educational justice.
My Project
This project will give our scholars access to an early literacy program called A-Z for Mat Man and Me. This program focuses on reading foundation reading skills, specifically on learning letter names and letter sounds in English.
This program will provide our scholars with opportunities to develop and strengthen their alphabet knowledge through engaging stories with a class favorite character, Mat Man.
Each scholar is working on very specific goals following their IEPs in regards to their current cognitive and physical abilities. This program provides a wide range of ways to access the materials such as reading a book, listening to the book, watching related video content, etc.
Also, this program includes a digital app for scholars to access the same school materials at home. This supports our partnership with families as we collaborate on each child's reading skills. Not to mention, in the case of sudden quarantine, this program allows for a smooth transition to remote learning.
I am so excited for the potential learning and joy this project will bring. Thank you for considering our project!
