Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school family consists of children that range in age from three to five and two teachers. They are eager to learn and come from diverse backgrounds. Even though their backgrounds are diverse, they all have one thing in common and that is that they all qualify for public funded Pre-K. To qualify for this program, their families must meet low income guidelines. Our district is made of up students in which close to 70% meet the national free and reduced lunch guidelines.
My students come to school each day excited to explore and experiment!
They are very creative and learn best by using hands on materials and games that connect with their backgrounds and previous experiences.
My Project
The alphabet and letter sounds materials and games that I have selected for this project will provide fun, hands on and engaging ways for my students to learn the alphabet, letter sounds, and understand rhyming words.
Research, as well as my experience with young children ages three to five, has shown that when provided with hands on, tactile and realistic experiences, young children learn and retain more.
The Alphabet tubs contain realistic objects that begin with each letter so the students can associate something familiar with that letter. The games allow them to build letters and use sensory experiences while learning letters. It has been shown that if children aren't on grade level reading by end of third grade there can be detrimental effects. By strengthening the foundation for reading skills in Pre-K, I am giving my students a head start to becoming proficient readers by the end of third grade.
