My students need alphabet and vowel sounds letter tubs from Lakeshore. I have borrowed these materials in the past, and they are wonderful for teaching letter sounds in context. The students love working with them.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are ESOL newcomers to the US. Many of them have recently arrived with their families as refugees or asylees. These children have left their home countries because of conflict or hardship, and have to adjust to almost everything in their lives being new at the same time. Their first school experience is in a language they have never used, so their little brains go into high gear to take everything in.
Soon, these students begin to love everything about school.
They love the books, the crafts, their friends, their teacher. The progress they make their first year is amazing, and the smiles I get everyday are so rewarding.
My Project
Young language learners do best with materials they can see and hold. Lakeshore letter tubs are inviting and fun- they are filled with little animals, household items, food items and other examples of nouns that begin with each letter. Using them helps these young students in many ways. First, they help students learn to distinguish between the sounds made by different letters, which can be a challenge when they first start their exposure to English. They also help students expand their English vocabulary. Most importantly, they are exciting for young learners- my students have huge smiles on their faces each time we are able to borrow a set to use.
