Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are recent immigrants to the United States, many trying to escape poverty and violence in their home countries. They are learning English and have a lot of hope to be successful and impact the world!
They are hardworking and courageously adjusting to new life in a new country, in a new city, in a new school.
They are COLLEGE BOUND, but will face a lot of adversity in doing so, including learning a new language, navigating new school systems and routines, and finding financial means. Their unique and powerful perspectives will make them the leaders we need in the United States to make this country a better, more inclusive community.
The school community is incredibly diverse and focused on inclusion and success for all students, including the unique newcomer population. These students are incredibly determined, passionate, and inspiring humans that keep me showing up each day!
My Project
Many of my students have experienced significant trauma. For some, simply moving to a new culture with a new language in their formative teenage years is enough trauma. For others, in addition to this major change their experienced or witnessed violence in their home countries and in the journeys to the United States.
They sincerely want to learn, but sometimes their trauma makes it difficult.
A diffuser in the classroom will helps students feel calm and focused, and therefore be able to engage in and enjoy learning.
An Apple TV will allow students to engage with the math through applications on an iPad from their seat, reducing anxiety in speaking in front of the class in a language they are still learning. This gives students the opportunity to publicly demonstrate their math knowledge without inducing the anxiety of public speaking. Additionally, an Apple TV makes me more mobile as a teacher, and not confined to a lecture style classroom, as I will be able to engage students from any point in the classroom. Or, for example, I can use the iPad camera to show the work that a group is doing to the rest of the class, without the need to ask them to rewrite it so all can see.
