Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In my mathematics classroom, I require the students to use a pencil only. Unfortunately, most of my students' parents do not own cars and, therefore, I am the provider of the daily supplies the students require for success. I hand out approximately 50 to 75 pencils daily.
It is a proven fact that a child can loose 3-5 pencils during one school day.
Sharpening one pencil on an ancient 1952 pencil sharpener can take hours away from academic instruction. Imagine how long it would take 32 students to each sharpen 3 to 5 pencils per day.
My students attend a Title I elementary school outside the city limits of Atlanta. We are located in a low-income, apartment and housing neighborhood. My students come to school every day with the desire to learn and to create a successful future for themselves. There are many existing barriers for my students to overcome in order for them to achieve success. They are willing to ignore their limits and put forth the effort to succeed.
When I hand the students an inspirational pencil for amazing work they are proud and will keep up with this special item. My students need daily motivator pencils and a classroom sharpener to keep them going during instruction.
My Project
An electric pencil sharpener is a trivial item that most people take for granted. For my class, this item would represent a short cut towards academic independence. An electric pencil sharpener would allow my students to focus on their studies and save time preparing for learning each morning and afternoon.
In addition, I am requesting a supply of inspirational pencils to reward my students for individual greatness and brilliance. A pencil is a simple item that they covet greatly.
