Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine you are a student who thinks that maybe, one day, you will grow up and accomplish something. So many kids believe that they are just biding their time until they get older, and then they will be what they wanted to be. Just Jake, written by a 12 yr-old, challenges them to be that person now.
My students love to help others.
They are the most social group of kids I have met (sometimes more social than they need to be!) These kids are also in a community where apathy and poverty run rampant. This means that most of them are bucking the trend by being interested in their education. Our school is a high poverty school that does our best in the situation we are in. So do our students!
My Project
I have incredible students who love to help others. They are happy to have what they have, but aspire to do so much more. Although they live in relative poverty, they are living rich lives. I want even more for them. Having the book, Just Jake #1, in their hands will not just allow them a laugh or two, they will see that they too can be authors if that is what they want to work towards.
I truly believe that this book will help my students to see that they can meet their goals now, not just when they "grow up someday".
Because the book is written by a 12 yr-old, it will show them that kids their age can do things that most people think only adults do. I actually hope it inspires some of them to pursue being an author or illustrator now, not someday.
