My Honors 1 class will be reading additional novels to the already outlined lesson for the year. Because our Honors classes are paralleled to the Global Studies 1 class, our students will find themselves learning about the past, in both their Global Studies class and their ELA class. As a support to the importance of learning about the past and how it impacts our lives now, my students will be reading a book by Lois Lowry, "The Giver", which is a Newberry Award book. This wonderful story is about the passing on of a society's history, from the old to the young. In the passing on of the "truth," the main character, Jonas, will come to understand the importance of knowing the history of his own past. It is my hope that my students will be able to relate that understanding to other early pieces of literature, as well as to their own person histories. I will need fifteen of the "The Giver" books, 1 pack of easel pad post-it (25" x 30") in order that students will be able to work in groups and collectively pool their ideas, and 5 packs of lined post-its to encourage students to take notes as they read and leave the post-in on the page they took the note from for discussion later. I teach English Language Arts at an inner-city school. It is always a challenge to find something they can, and will relate to within themselves and their families. Your consideration is greatly appreciated.
