Help me give my students the materials they need to be successful within the walls of my classroom. When student have access to the materials they need in the classroom, the more they can focus on their education.
6th grade is a very important transition year in a student's life. My middle school students face various "obstacles" such as new classroom schedules, new friends, stinky gym clothes, and the dreaded locker! But what some people may not realize is that a lot of times these students may struggle to have the proper materials they need to be successful in their pursuit of education.
Education is a basic human right and all students should have the ability to access basic classroom materials so that they can be successful in the classroom.
My DonorsChoose.org project is one to help students have materials needed within their own classroom. Within my classroom, we have a designated "Student Supply Center" in which students may take and use any supplies they may need. By providing flexible seating options during class, students are able to pick a physical position that allows them to learn best. By allowing this, ALL students are provided materials to be successful regardless of race, gender, and socio-economic background.
My Project
At WLMS, we have students from all socio-economic backgrounds. However, a large percentage of our students find themselves struggling to obtain the appropriate materials needed for their education. By not being able to obtain these materials with them, students' education are often affected. This often has snowball effects in other areas of the students' lives.
By having these tools readily available to all students, the stigma of needing is taken away.
Within the walls of my classroom, I have a a student supply center that is accessible whenever for students to use. This center is centrally located within the classroom, so that all students may easily access it throughout the class period. There are a variety of reasons students may need to use this center, but the end goal is for all students to be able to use it at any time. By giving students access to materials in a safe, nonjudgmental environment, students are able to focus more on their education rather than what they need to succeed. I am requesting markers, pencils, map books, folders and more.
