My students need to experience college. They need to know that college is something that is within their reach and believe that they can attend college.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All of my students are striving to graduate from high school unlike many of their parents. I teach in a school with a population of 97%-98% free/reduced lunch. Parents of my students often work 2-3 jobs to support the family necessities. In addition, I teach students with disabilities. They particularly have difficulties with math, reading, and writing. As a result, my students do not see attending college as something attainable since their parent role models went straight into the job world from high school and due to the academic struggles they often find challenging. I believe when my students have the opportunity to visit a local college, hear how current students have overcome similar hardships and see their success, then these Sweetwater Middle School students will have the desire and drive to attend a college or university.
My Project
Georgia Gwinnett College is only 15 miles away from our school. GGC is a new, innovative, accredited four-year university. The college was recently ranked as the fifth highest regional college in the south from a report by U.S. News and World Report. The college is committed to being affordable and accessible to all students, including those with disabilities.
My students will be able to see and understand that they can go to college.
They will learn what it takes to get into a college, what will be expected of them once they are in college, and that a college education is something that they can afford. They will be able to see what a classroom looks like, what it would be like to live in a dorm and interact with current students at the school.
