My Students

I teach in an Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classroom. My students are a very diverse bunch that walk into the classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I make sure to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. Every day is an adventure with many hidden treasures to discover. I feel very fortunate to influence their lives, as they do mine.

My Project

An ornithologist and one volunteer from the Audubon Society of New York will come to two second-grade classes for an 8-week "For the Birds" program. The "For the Birds" program includes engaging activities that take place both inside and outside of the classroom. The field trips to Central and Seward Parks along with the hands-on curriculum include the 60 children in the two second-grade classes of all levels, strengths, and needs.

The students explore local New York City birds and habitats using different methods, resources, and technology.

The bird study we conduct with our classes, combined with the "For the Birds' program, includes science, literacy, environmental awareness, gardening, and a great deal more. This program will excite and encourage all 64 students to want to learn and engage more in science and community work.

Donations to this project will improve the lives and education of the young learners we teach. The 8-week program goes well beyond second grade, into their middle-school years of learning. Children need to be exposed to nature, not just once in a while, but for an extended period. They must be given ample opportunities to engage with local species of birds and habitats so that they understand the lives of birds and want to protect the habitats and, in the long run, their own community.
