This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach reading and writing in a high needs community of St. Louis. Despite the many hardships my students face, they are incredibly motivated individuals who look for the positive in life.
What impresses me most is that my students don't give up when the learning gets tough and always push themselves to exceed expectations.
Perhaps what I admire most about them is how kind they are. They are by far the sweetest and most polite group of kids I have ever taught.
My Project
I am asking for 2 Botley The Coding Robot & Action Challenge sets so my students can improve their coding and STEM skills. Even though I normally teach reading and writing, I'm lucky enough to have two periods where I get to see my students for an additional period each day. This class does not have a set curriculum and we are free to learn anything we want. Normally we work on reading a class novel, but I think it would be great for us to switch it up and learn something new.
At our school, students have very little access to technology and these robots would allow them to learn the new skill of coding and help them get ahead in our increasingly technological world.
Truthfully, I've never taught coding before but after reading about the Botley, I know that this is something that our class can learn together. It will not only teach my students about critical thinking and problem solving, but it will also teach them about perseverance and grit.
