My students need measuring and heating equipment, manila folders, and many different household items in order to create their own science fair projects.
Our students have been working hard all year engaging with and learning awesome things about how the world around them works. They now have the opportunity to culminate their learning by graduating to the role of a scientist through a science fair project!
Our students are energetic, full of personality, and ready to get their hands dirty creating and performing their own experiments!
They are from North Tulsa, a predominantly low-income community. We have the special opportunity to be in a 7th Grade Academy setting, where students of ages 12 and 13 get a lot of special attention as we transition them from elementary school to high school. Unfortunately, a lot of students enter our building performing below grade level. But, with a focus on literacy and engaging lessons, we hope to see students ready to leave our building in the spring, prepared to succeed in 8th grade, high school, and beyond!
My Project
Our students will be spending the last month of school immersing themselves in the role of scientist - asking questions, researching, designing, performing, and ultimately presenting the findings of their experiments. Since many of my students' families do not have the extra money to go to the store and buy material's for their child's science fair project, we will be providing a stock of common household supplies along with experiment ideas for students to choose from. Our school also lacks key lab materials such as hot plates for heating and safety items such as goggles and gloves.
Throughout the course of the month, students will be to practice and truly internalize their observation, hypothesis, measurement, data recording, graph-making, and analysis skills The process will end with a science fair, open to the community, where students will present their experiments on the mini tri-fold presentation boards they will create from manila folders, stapled together.
The science fair will be truly impactful for our students and their families.
Student's self-esteem in science will be boosted, creating lasting confidence that will lead to their continued success in future science courses. For families, seeing their student complete such a rigorous, cumulative project will bring a lot of joy.
