Hooray! This project is fully funded
As a former school librarian, I know the importance of having books that stimulate reading, that matches student's interests and reading abilities, and that are updated. This year I have been assigned to a classroom. I am currently working with grades 7 and 8 in the areas of social studies and literacy. However, when I entered my classroom, I was disappointed and sadden by the collection in my classroom library.
My classroom library contains books that are yellowed, damaged, dated, and at times inappropriate for my young adult audience. For example, as a former librarian, I am aware of the potential biases and prejudices presented in some books. I came across several books in my collection that refer to African Americans as, “colored,?or that projects Native Americans, and minorities negatively. Although, I weeded these books from the collection, I realized that they were just a sample of books that I do not want to present to my students. Furthermore, I have books in my collection that are intended for younger grades and that are severely damaged and worn.
My students often complain during independent reading that they cannot find a book they would like to read. Although, I have personally purchased books for my classroom, I still don't have the amount of books to appropriately meet the needs of all my students. Friends and teachers have advised that I ask parents for donations to build my collection. However, because the children I serve come from low socio economic neighborhoods, I do not feel comfortable doing this.
After weeding my collection, I only have five small bins of books to serve both my seventh and eight graders. Therefore, I am requesting for donations to build my classroom library. I would like to initially focus on building my fiction collection. These books will be used by my students for independent reading, book talks, and discussions. My students and I would greatly appreciate any donations we receive.
