This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hello! I have the honor to participate in a 2-year cohort as the Sano, Japan Teacher Representative who will fundraise and travel with 3 of my students from LMS to Japan, as well as, twelve other 8th graders who have been selected from our school district. We will be traveling to Japan and stay with Host Families. In the fall we welcomed students into our schools and our homes. Our school district has had an exchange program with our sister city of Sano for over 20 years.

This cultural experience has a rigorous application process for my 8th graders.

I had over 20 applicants who showed extreme interest in this opportunity to learn, engage, and develop their understanding of another culture almost 7,000 miles away. Students had to have 2 teacher recommendations, 1 community recommendation, as well as respond to several situational prompts and provide an essay explaining their commitment and desire to travel.

Three students were selected in November: two boys and one girl. All 3 students are involved in the music program and have many talents!

My Project

My 8th-grade students have the opportunity of a lifetime! They will learn in a Japanese school, stay with Japanese families, and socialize with same-aged peers to expose themselves to a new culture. They will try new food (tea rituals and ramen) and be introduced to global thinking and acceptance of others. Two of our days will be spent in the school setting, two of our days will be spent following the schedules of our host families, and 2 of our days will be touring Tokyo.

Travel is the only thing that makes your life richer.
