My students need a way to engineer in our classroom using age appropriate materials.

To me, my students are my world! I am a first year teacher working at a Title I school. Our entire school receives free breakfast, lunch, and snack daily. My students may not come from a lot, but you would never know that. It doesn’t stop their imagination and dreams. My students come into class every morning with a smile on their face excited and eager to learn. No matter their home situation, or what they have gone through the night before, my students greet eachother every morning with a handshake, high-five, or hug to welcome one another. Our classroom is our happy and safe place. Each morning we spend our first half an hour working on our social and emotional skills. We have made huge gains in this area and are continuing to better ourselves each day.
We are truly one big family.
We push each other and hold each other accountable. My students have a burning desire to learn that is evident.
My kids voice that they are sad on Friday’s because that means that they don’t get to come to school for two days.
I am so thankful that I was chosen to be their teacher.
Having different options for my first graders to build and engineer would be a dream to have in our classroom! Being a first year teacher, I have struggled with providing my own materials for my students to be able to do this. If these Legos were provided for us, my students would be able to show their creativity through building and imagining on their own. They would be able to engineer and create things in a meaningful way. All three of these Lego sets provide different task cards that my students could use while they are building if they needed some ideas. Having these Legos during indoor recess would be another wonderful way that we would use these in our classroom. Most of my students come from low-income households and they do not have the resources to go home to build things like Legos. Allowing my students to become familiar with experimenting, building, and being creative through Legos would make a huge impact on students' learning and it would give them another reason to look-forward to coming to school for.
