Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There is a wide range of high school students on my swim and water polo teams. Many of my students are from low-income households, come from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds, and many do not have a college graduate in the family.
Several of my students do not live in the school's immediate area and find themselves riding a bus to and from school for over an hour.
They face many difficult challenges due to geographical and economic factors. They are a dedicated group of students, both in and out of the pool, with an average GPA of 3.0. Because many of my students are athletes, they attend my morning health class that begins at 7:00 a.m.
My Project
So many athletic teams start their fall season by participating in tournaments outside their leagues. My water polo teams have rarely had the chance to play more than one team outside our league. Many of my players have never played water polo, so the first few games are learning experiences for them.
This coming year, we would like our boys' water polo team to be able to build confidence in playing the sport by participating in water polo tournaments before playing any league games.
The tournaments will help my players to: develop team building, improve ball passing and goal shooting, and build endurance for the league games. Seven minute quarters may not seem like much, but "egg beating" and swimming for seven minutes, without a break, is very difficult. The more participation in tournaments, the more confident and better my players will become!
