My Students

How can we help our kids become more effective students, leaders, and citizens? Stephen Covey offers his insight on the habits we need to instill in our youth to make them as productive and successful as possible.

I teach 7th and 8th grade public-school students, which of course means that my classroom is always full of energy.

We are part of a low-income district, which is sometimes evident in the support and resources my students have outside of school. Nevertheless, my students have a spirit and tenacity that does and will help them overcome any hurdles they must face.

My Project

I teach bright and caring middle school students who amaze me with there ideas and visions for their world and community. However, sometimes getting these ideas into action is difficult for them because they lack the necessary leadership skills. Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens would be an excellent tool to assist in moving my students from vision to action. It is written in a language that young people can engage with, and it also deals with how to be successful beyond the classroom. I think that if my students were able to start building these "effective habits" now, they would have a durable foundation for whatever they choose to take on in their future.

It is a rare thing when somebody is able to give you a toolkit on something like how to be successful.

And though it will take more than just reading Covey's book, having that foundation is a great start. By helping to create effective students, we are helping to create effective citizens; and by helping to create effective citizens, we are helping to create an effective, thriving community and world.
