Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am preparing to teach a unit on invertebrates to my sixth grade life scientists this spring. Along with various readings and worksheets, I would like to give my students the hands on opportunity to watch caterpillars transform into butterflies. Not only will this give them the opportunity to see invertebrates up close, but it will also help my students understand how cycles work. They will be able to record the progress of the cocoons and the hatching of the butterflies in their journals. This activity will require the purchase of a butterfly kit and some auxiliary materials. I currently have 150 students in five classes at MS 302 in the South Bronx. These students are not accustomed to having having many hands on lab experiences. After all, they cannot even take their textbooks home. I am working to change that and help these kids see some of the wonderful parts of nature that they miss while living in the Bronx.
