it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The purpose of our sixth grade reading class at Carnegie Middle School in Carson, CA is to foster an appreciation for reading and increase the students reading levels. In order to excite students over reading, however, we need books!! After reading "The Chronicles of Narnia" as a read-aloud, reading "Tuck Everlasting" together as a class, and reading novels independently, we have found that the most effective method is to read books as a class. However, being a Title 1 school with approximately three-fourths of our students qualifying for free lunch programs, our school is limited in funds to provide quality novels and our students are limited in their means to get them on their own. This leaves my sixth grade reading class with a need for books, and no means of getting them!
Our class needs one book for each student so that every student may equally participate in the reading. While we are open to accepting any novels appropriate for a sixth grade classroom, my students voted on "The Outsiders" by SE Hinton as the book they would most like to read. This book tells the story of two rival gangs who learn that fighting does not solve their disputes and determine that their rivalry is not worth losing the lives of their friends through the violence it leads to. With Carnegie Middle School located in Los Angeles, there is a strong gang presence both on campus and in the community. With this book relating to so much in my students lives, it is a strong experience for them to follow the development of the plot and learn with the characters that gang rivalries are not worth the consequences that the violence brings.
If we do receive 35 copies of "The Outsiders," the students in my reading class will experience a quality novel with the potential to shift their views on the violence that occurs in their own lives. These books will have an immediate impact on my students, and I will continue to use them in my future reading classes, as well as share them with other classes in need of books.
By fulfilling our need of a class set of novels, you are providing the sixth grade students of Carnegie Middle School with an extraordinary literary experience that can draw them to reading and illuminate the consequences of violence like that seen in "The Outsiders."
