Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our sixth-grade students live in La Habra, California. Each day they come to school with their smiling faces and kind words that get me excited for the day ahead! Our goal each day is to connect their learning with real-life for more engaging and meaningful classroom participation. Having iPads has been helpful in ways, but genuine real-life experiences can only be had by going out there and living them!
More than half of our 6th-grade students come from low-income households and 70% of them receive a free or reduced pay breakfast and lunch at school.
It can be challenging to build these connections because some of the students have limited life experiences outside of their hometown of La Habra.
They are eager to learn, but excited when the learning is fun! As their teachers, we are motivated to create new adventures in learning for them outside of La Habra. We know that exposure to new educational experiences will inspire them to make learning their priority as they are growing up.
My Project
This 2-night, 3-day camping experience will give my students an appreciation of the outdoors and the environment, teach them effective teamwork, instruct them about the cultural history of Orange County, and provide them access to the natural resources of the surrounding areas.
My students will go on hikes, engage in academic immersions, participate in recreational activities like archery, and enjoy evening activities like square dancing and campfires.
Along with all of these amazing experiences, they will also learn new responsibilities as they are lodged in bungalows with their classmates, report to meals together, and follow a daily schedule with their group leaders.
