My Students

Our students come from a tight-knit community where education is strongly valued. They have a thirst for knowledge and deserve to have all the tools they need to succeed. My colleague and I teach 150 vivacious eleven- and twelve-year-olds.

Our sixth graders are funny, enthusiastic, and hardworking!

They come to school daily with smiles on their faces, and they put a smile on mine. They deserve the best tools in their education to help them get far in their lives and accomplish their dreams!

My Project

These materials will make a huge impact on my students this year for many years to come. We need heat lamps, thermometers, thermal blankets and other materials. Many of these materials are non-consumables which means they will be able to be used time and time again. My students are going to be learning about thermal energy and conduction later in the year.

These materials will allow my students to receive a hands-on experience that will enhance their interest and understanding of thermal energy.

We will use the materials to create penguin houses for penguin shaped ice-cubes and have an engineering competition to see who can come up with the best insulated igloo for their penguin to survive in under a heat lamp. By using various materials to create the igloos, students will be able to further understand which materials are conductors and how thermal energy is conducted or reflected.

Students will test their igloos with an ice-cube penguin inside and place them under a heat lamp for a specified amount of time. It will be a contest to see which group can keep their penguin intact the longest! My students LOVE and LEARN from hands-on inquiry based experiences. When asked what their favorite part of school is, my students ALWAYS say science, and I want to keep it that way!
