Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are of a Hispanic background and unfortunately many of them have not heard of the Holocaust. That makes me sad.
I teach in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood were about 96% of my students receive free lunch and are from low income households.
In 6th grade we study the Holocaust. I feel that it was a part of history that should NEVER be forgotten. When presented with the event and what occurred, the students got excited and wanted to learn more. As an educator I feel that it is my duty to teach them as well as I can about this tragic event in history.
My Project
I am requesting a class trip to the IL Holocaust Museum. This is probably one of the last museums of its kind to be built in partnership with Holocaust survivors. My students will be exposed to the happenings that went on during the Holocaust. They will experience it through pictures, clips and possibly first hand stories.
They are so excited with the possibility to go to the museum. We are studying the Holocaust and by the time our trip comes around, the students will have studied it for about 2 months. They are at an age where they can comprehend the severity of the Holocaust.
I feel that my students need to learn about the Holocaust, just like 9-11 is vivid in their minds.
The museum will provide an unforgettable experience. It is a harsh reality and they need to know what went on. This will hopefully make them a stronger person, knowing that these Jewish people went through all that; yet remained strong. Please help me to educate my students on this unforgettable event.
