Help me give my students the ability to continue to learn about ceramic techniques through remote learning. Students will be able to come to the school to pick up their clay and work from home!
My students are full of ideas and creativity. They are working toward understanding art as a vehicle of human communication. Art gives students a sense of confidence and validation.
Their creativity and excitement to learn are so encouraging!
They inspire me every day to be a better teacher and artist.
My goal is to give my students all the tools needed for them to find their voice through art while they are learning remotely. Our school is a middle school located outside of the Atlanta Metro Area. They typically range in age between 11-13 years old. Our student body is very diverse which creates a wonderful collaborative culture for my students. I look forward to seeing the artists they grow to be throughout our time together.
My Project
Students will learn about the Sgraffito clay process that originated in Nigeria and then spread all over the world. They will learn safe and proper tool/material use, ceramics vocabulary including methods for hand-building, stages of dryness, and firing process. Students will learn pinch construction techniques focusing on wall thickness, form silhouette, scoring/slipping to join forms, and intentional surface. They will learn about the stages of dryness of the clay for specific purposes including joining forms, smoothing, making attachments, and making sgraffito markings. What glaze is, how to apply, and the firing process.
Clay is one of their favorite projects and I hope that we can continue to do projects like this even as they are learning remotely.
