Even middle school students want to be successful learners for a bright future regardless of their current situation. My sixth graders want to be winners in life. Many students have experienced setbacks and trauma but need to feel as if their life matters. They need to know that when they walk into my classroom that it is a safe, nurturing, and loving environment. It is filled with opportunities for them to learn, grow, and make their dreams become a reality!
At the start of the school year, time is put into building classroom culture and creating routines. It’s important for some basic student materials to be available. These supplies will be used for two sections of ELA. Each student will have a file folder for data collection and work samples for their portfolios. The post-it notes will be used for text-dependent analysis on a weekly basis and practice paragraph checks. The pens will be used for partner work when students edit their writing. These materials will be used to foster learning and collaboration in the classroom for success all year.
