Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember when you were able to make a complete personal sense of Exponential Logarithmic functions? Would the use of a graphing calculator likely have aided in your achievement? I know that my students would definitely benefit from the access to this technology.
My students are a group of very bright eager learners.
Currently, none of my students own a graphing calculator. The majority of them come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds so they would be as appreciative as any to receive a gift such as this. They attend a Title-1 school California school where most students receive free or reduced lunch. They are also a group that is very interested in the technological aspect of our current society. They would not only put the technology to use but would likely take it to levels far beyond the call of duty in my classroom.
My Project
Currently, the units that I teach on graphing Exponential and Logarithmic functions are among the most difficult for my students to grasp. This is a pattern that I attempt to attack from different methods each and every year. Through the use of graphing calculators my students will be able to engage in the content in ways that they never have before. They will be able to take their explorations and inquiry far enough to gain an in depth understanding of the characteristics of their functions, transformations of their graphs, and inverse relationships between exponential and logarithmic functions.
The students will also learn a lot more by using a graphing calculator such as finding intersection of two graphs, x-intercept, and maximum or minimum values.
To see this happen as a result of decisions and inquiries they themselves develop would be priceless. This would result in a direct enhancement to their long term memory and ability to apply mathematics to the real world.
Donations to support this project will reach far beyond my classes.
Graphing calculators will help my students to build a much stronger foundation that can only benefit them when they reach higher levels of mathematics. Students that have access to graphing calculators in my class will have opportunities to develop their interests in technology and mathematics as a major in college. The opportunity and exposure of this technology could lead to future careers for many of my students.
