Our Elementary School is a wonderful place to learn. There is a family feel to this rural Pre-K to 6th grade building. Staff, students, parents, and our community work together to make our school the best it can be. My first graders are excited about learning new things. So much is expected from them during this pivotal year. There is nothing better than watching them grow academically, socially, and physically during the 10 months we spend together. Each student in my class is unique, and each deserves the best education possible.
My Project
This year, Guided Math will be implemented in our classroom. While the teacher is working with a small group, other students will be working on fact fluency along with other centers. Memorizing math addition facts is an important part of the math component of Common Core. To be prepared for 2nd grade, students need to be automatic with facts to 20. For many of my students this is hard work and takes much repetition. Flash cards get "old" pretty quickly. Even first graders are digital wizards these days. Putting an iPad in their hands to practice math facts will make all the difference in the world. There are many apps that can be used to assist with fact fluency. All students, from the novice to the expert, can be met on their own individual level and work systematically through the facts. Working on a tablet makes this chore fun while preparing students for the 21st century.
