Help me give my students (and ALL 5th graders) an awesome STEM experience at Northern Illinois University!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
This grant is being requested for the ENTIRE 5th grade in District 428. All 550+ students in the fifth grade, from Cortland to DeKalb to Malta will benefit.
Our students are a diverse, energetic, and creative bunch, who all love to learn!
They especially benefit from the fun and excitement of hands-on lessons, which is why we have made STEM education a focus in the fifth grade. From building robots to using Ozobots, Makey-makey, and Spheros, our students learn and grow through the many activities we participate in throughout the school year!
The 5th-grade curriculum team is looking for ways to introduce more STEM education into our curriculum. One way to help prepare our students for our 5th grade STEAM Expo is to participate in a STEM Reads Experience at NIU. This experience will allow our students to better prepare for the Expo, get to know other students in D428, and engage with a wide variety of hands-on STEM activities. Students will work with NIU faculty, staff, and students in an exciting environment.
Providing students with hands-on STEM, Social Justice, writing, and reading experiences in an engaging environment will greatly increase their engagement in future STEM activities.
We are also hoping to inspire our students to become excited about all that our local University, NIU, has to offer them.
