This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are a wonderful group of 5th graders. My students come to school eager and excited to learn. I teach in an urban school district with families who are low income/high poverty. My school receives 100% free breakfast and lunch for all of the students. The students come from many different backgrounds and face many different challenges in their day-to-day lives, including homelessness, unemployment, and poverty. I strive to implement different strategies and tools to help my students succeed.
My Project
The start of a new school year is usually very exciting for most students, but for so many of mine it is a time of worry because they will not have the supplies they need for school. Some of my students are or have been homeless at one time or another and school supplies are not a priority for them at this time. This project will enable me to help them start school out on the right foot. It will help to erase the worry from their faces to realize that their needs will be met and they will have the supplies they need to succeed in school. The pencils and pencil sharpener will be used to help my student complete their work, the crayons to color, the glue sticks and scissors to complete projects. No one likes to stand out for not having the basic supplies and this project will enable me to help my students fit in and achieve.
