Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our class motto is "Never Settle for Less Than Your Best!" Sometimes, my students do their best 21st century learning on top of their desks, curled on a couch, or while on the floor. I work with the most lovable bunch of twenty-two diverse fifth grade students.
I teach at a Title 1 school where 15 of my students speak English as a second language and three are new to our country this year.
Although my school is in a community of high poverty, my students come to school with a smile on their faces, always greet me when they see me in the morning, and never leave without saying goodbye. This group of students is truly determined to prove that they are smarter than a fifth grader! They surprise me with their knowledge everyday.
My Project
Even though my students are the big kids at our elementary school, they make the most of our classroom's small size that is a trailer outside of the main building. That means that they will work on the floor because that is most cozy to them. Often, you will see a student working on a laptop, curled up with a book in the corner, or working with some other classmates on a math challenge all while on ground. My students are awake longer with me than they are with their own parents each day. Therefore, I don't mind how they do their best 21st century learning as long as they do so productively and comfortably. For most of my class, the floor is the place to be since our classroom couch is usually quickly taken. I used to have a standard classroom rug at the very beginning of this school year, but I agreed with the custodians to throw it away because of the dirty wear and tear of years of former 5th graders. I always want a clean, comfortable learning environment for my students.
This colorful rug will be such a warm and inviting addition to our classroom.
When I see my students quickly go to the floor after given workshop instructions, I feel sad that they make the most of sitting on a cold, tile floor. With winter weather upon us, we will be spending a lot more time inside our classroom because of indoor recess. With this rug, our learning environment will be more engaging and enjoyable. Thank you for thinking of my students!
