My school is a large community school where all of the students live within 2 miles of the school. I have a diverse population of students. My school serves over 50% minorities and 32% economically disadvantaged. We also have a large military population (25%) and students who speak other languages. I have two ELA classes each day to whom I teach reading, language arts, and writing.
My classes include a very broad range of skill levels with some students reading above grade level and other students reading on or below grade level.
Our school theme is Explorers, and that's exactly what my class will be this year!
My Project
My project will add two Dell Chromebooks to the six I currently have in my classroom. My goal this year is to have 22 Chromebooks, allowing my students to be 1:1 for technology devices. We use Chromebooks in the classroom for reading practice in iReady and Achieve 3000. In addition to online practice time, my students also require explicit instruction in social studies and ELA standards, so the 1:1 platform makes the best utilization of our time!
Using their Chromebooks for online informational text not only enhances their reading comprehension, but also gives them substantial background knowledge in topics like history, economics, technology, science, and finance!
My students will also be able to use their devices for vocabulary enhancement as well as individual research projects. I could never accomplish this if students have to share devices in rotations.
