Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My team and I teach a group of motivated 5th graders in an impoverished rural community. These students range from special education students to highly-capable and gifted students who are all eager learners. These kids are starving for experiences that take them out of their sheltered community.
All students deserve a chance to get out into nature to learn about the world around us.
Our students rarely have this opportunity, and some seldom leave the small town where they live. Our school serves 100% free and reduced lunch to students whose families are mainly agricultural workers. These students don't often have rich experiences outside of school and home.
My Project
Walking through the forest, canoeing, learning about plants, trees, and animals, and participating in campfire programs are only some of the activities that will be available to our students through this field trip. The science concepts taught at camp will be invaluable to them as learners. Students will focus on forest, wetland, and wildlife ecology in the most hands-on way possible!
Not only will our students be developing their science skills in nature, they will also have the opportunity to build community with one another.
Our 5th graders will have the chance to participate in challenge activities that will provide the opportunity for students to understand group dynamics and how to work together in a variety of situations. The skills they learn at camp will apply to problem solving in the classroom and create success back at school.
We are really excited for our 5th graders to learn about community and responsibility for the Earth in a camp setting!
