My Students

I teach fifth grade math at a New Orleans school. We have just moved into a temporary building while we wait for our main building to be fully renovated. I am trying my best to set up a comfortable and functioning classroom as it is a LEAP testing grade. My desire is to improve the scaled scores of my students this year and teach them common core standards. My students come from diverse ethnic groups, and belong to a low socioeconomic background, a majority of my students of my students are on the free-lunch program.

My fifth grade math students are innovative, curious, and enthusiastic because they enjoy learning new ideas, engaging in hands-on activities, and participating in STEM related projects.

They are talented in academics and as well as the arts! The city is rebuilding due to several hurricanes and constant flooding. Many families often struggle to find employment and financial opportunities. Despite challenges, the families want the very best education for their children and the students strive to follow the school's motto to excel academically and individually.

My Project

I am requesting math games and manipulatives to help deepen the understanding of mathematics of my students. I am requesting fraction charts to display in my class as a reference. The math card games will be used in centers for individual and group participation. Math place value discs are essential for understanding adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing with decimals. My parents also wish for me to use hands-on and not just worksheets.

Students learn best when the learning is active and exciting.

My students will benefit from your donations because the materials will provide them with engaging activities as they will gain self-confidence and become motivated to take on challenges and explore higher studies.
