Northwestern Oklahoma is a special place and my classroom is like Narnia. I teach 5-12th grade history classes at a small country school full of kids who have been born and raised hours from any larger cities. I have taken my students on a number of trips over the years and my goal is to open a whole new world to these students. Oklahoma has suffered from funding shortages and this year that means my normal schedule has changed a bit. I teach 5-12th grade history. With our budget low, we combined 5 & 6th grades and I would love to have some new material for my new 5th grade Early American History class. I've been looking at some historical fiction to also help with their reading skills. Please help my class get these much needed classroom books.
My Project
History is the forgotten subject of education. I believe it is essential to their lives and knowing American history makes them better citizen and adults. Since we are such a small school and students in elementary classrooms are tested on Math, Science, and Reading/English, they usually get the remaining time in the school year for history and art. I want to show these kids the excitement and importance of our subject! I can do this while helping them with reading skills and expanding their minds and their vocabulary with new sets of classroom books. Books open new worlds to students and teach them to see things from different perspectives! So very important!
