As a growing school, my eleventh graders are on the forefront of defining what it means to lead, act, and learn at our expeditionary learning school. This Title I school serves students from both rural and urban areas, and my students represent a wide variety of the economic spectrum in our county.
My students are bright, innovative, and eager to change the world, and the project-based focus of our school allows them to take charge of their own learning.
They are bound to be leaders in our community, as they truly care about the issues facing our growing town.
My Project
Our 11th grade year is focused on the big theme of justice and injustice. Our students have already delved into Just Mercy, and other texts, to examine how this plays out in our world.
Our next task is to read together, The 57 Bus, to add complexity to our understanding of justice, both in our justice system and in our education system.
By focusing on these themes, students will be able to have discussions about the world as it is, as well as the world as they want to see it in their future. We have an advisory structure, called Crew, where we have a literacy day each week. All 11th graders will read and engage with this text in Crew, giving them the opportunity to have these discussions in a focused environment with peers they are already close with and a teacher who knows them well.
This means that all students will have the opportunity to investigate issues that are important to them while engaging with the narrative in this text.
