All my students are ESL learners (English as a Second Language). Currently, we represent 20 different countries, many diverse languages, and cultures.
My students are finding their individuality, self-confidence, and self-worth.
They're eager to share their personal experiences and cultural traditions through acceptance of one another.
I believe reading can spark children's courage and self-confidence. I would like my students to have the opportunity to see themselves in a positive light through books. If they see a character on the cover of a book that resembles their likeness, they would definitely be drawn to crack open the book and explore what's inside.
Once they are inside, the book can allow them to see the possibilities that otherwise they may not have seen or experienced.
My students should see themselves reflected in the titles on the shelves in our classroom.
